Eating a bagel (mostly bleached white flour bullshit) (~40g carbs) before bed is horrible and will get you fat. Eating a lower glycemic carb with actual nutrients like sweet potato right after a workout will actually help with gains and recovery. 40g of "carb counting" is not universal.
Why does it have to be a low glycemic carb tho? I would imagine that after a workout the body is starving for energy and thus it would make more sense if said energy were released faster into the bloodstream?
Eat carbs with substance (vitamins) that won't get you fat. Sweet potatoes, quinoa, or brown rice have alot more vitamins than say white bread or white potatoes. Sweet Potato/Yam glycemic load is around 22 which is more than enough for a post workout spike and give you fiber, vit a, vit c etc. Reaching for shitty carbs like flour based stuff, bleached wheat don't give you any health benefits and won't help in keep body fat down
