Why would you not take advantage of the increased recovery you get from AAS? Are you saying that you're able to train just as hard and long as a natty as when you're juicing? Then why are you taking the AAS in the first place? If your AAS doesn't increase your recovery I'd say you should find another dealer ![]() I keep records as I'd like to know how hard each set was last time, and how many reps and sets I did. I want to know if I'm improving at what I'm spending so much time and energy on. You even mention that progressively increasing the weight is the best way to get stronger (I agree) but how the fuck would you be able to remember every single set from last week? Also, lifting the most you can possible do on any given day is great if your juicing, but a natty will not be able to sustain balls to the wall workouts week in and week out. Is it because you're lazy and would rather sit on your phone between sets instead of spending 2 seconds writing 4-5 decimals and letters, or do you think that your testosterone will plummet if you start touching a wussy pen between sets? What the fuck do you do between sets since you don't have time to log? Are you even following a program is that a waste of time as well? Well renowned coaches such as Mike Robertson, Eric Cressey and Chad Waterburry recommends keeping a workout log, but maybe they haven't reached that level of experience you have. "Motivation is fleeting and easy to rely on because it requires no concentrated effort to get. Motivation comes to you, you don't even have to chase after it.
Discipline is reliable, motivation is fleeting. The question isn't how to keep yourself motivated, it's how to train yourself to work without it." |

I prefer to keep a log. Between sets, or at the end, I write down my lifts in notes on my iphone.
That way I know I am progressing. |

I acknowledge that you have more experience than me, but in my opinion you should always have a goal in mind even if you're going to failure. You can potentially push yourself for more reps than you otherwise could have if you try to beat your last week's results every time. It's the most motivating thing for me to compare my results to previous weeks and look back to see how much stronger I've gotten. If I didn't keep a log I would feel like I'm just dicking around. Better motivation = better results. |

Bottom line: Routines don't matter 10% as much as diet, so don't get hung up in all this hoopla. If you workout better (or think you do) with a routine then use one. Honestly when I did routines it felt equivalent to the pick-up bullshit routines that everyone was suppose to do like the mystery method. Like oh yeah so and so coach from fitness plus magazine says you'll never have to worry about a six pack again with this routine. Sounds real similar to the pickup propaganda. Yeah they had the potential to work but so did just working out.

So do you think that it's better to just do whatever you feel like for a few hours than to follow a structured program with progressive overload Mark?

I've successfully went from 130lb 10% bf to 180lb 12% bf and at one point I was 165 at 7% bf "doing whatever I feel like for a few hours." I obviously do biceps everyday, all day, same weight, same reps, same sets, year in and year out. You don't need a routine to do progressive overload. You can do the best progressive overload routine in the world...if you go home and eat a bag of doritos and drink pop, youre not gonna make gains. That's my point.
ANDDDD on the flip side, if you go to gym everyday and just get in a mediocre workout but your diet is on point you can look amazing. |

While that may work for you (and how do I know it did, you could be pulling those numbers out of your ass) it won't be the case for most. Also, I never said that following a routine could replace eating properly. You log your workouts and followed a structured program with progressive since it's widely accepted to be the best route of action, and has thousands of awesome physigues supporting it.

Routine doesn't matter.... I go in and "wing it" 5 days a week pretty much.
The only thing that stays relatively consistent is the actual splits themselves For instance.... you're never going to hear about me training chest on a Friday or arms on a Monday... Routines can cause boredom and mental fatigue.... got keep it exciting and get "creative" That's a big part that dudes tend to neglect.... the creative aspect to building your body |

130 lbs @ 10% bf = 117 lbs LBM. 165 lbs @ 7% bf = 153 lbs LBM. 180 lbs @ 12% bf = 158 lbs LBM. That's 41 lbs muscle gained. |

That's great, but I doubt OP's going to start juicing. And please don't tell me that there isn't a difference between how someone using AAS trains compared to the way a natty train. Progressive overload will always be king for a natty, I can't understand why you're telling OP to start dicking around in the gym doing whatever the fuck he wants to. It just makes no sense in my head. OP, your fears are warranted. Many of the programs created by magazines and various bodybuilding sites are complete bullshit. It's a good thing you're skeptical. I ask you to be skeptical one more time. Do you think the most efficient way to build muscle for a natty is to go around in the gym with no plan, doing whatever you want? If so, go ahead. I didn't think the "Get Hung" guide would have girls eyeing my bulge. It did.
I didn't think that your exercise and diet advice would have girls checking me out. It did.
I DEFINITELY didn't think that your hair-loss prevention would fix my hairline. Not in a billion years. It mother fucking did. You saved me a crazy amount of time, a ton of money, unnecessary pain, and destroyed my #1 source of anxiety. DESTROYED IT.
