I'm having a really hard time quitting video games. I've been in love with gaming since I was 13 months old, according to my mother. I am very good at them, and I derive some of my identity from my aptitude for electronics. I am also an avid reader and guitar player, but video games have always captured my heart. If I was the sort of guy who could easily moderate his impulses, then I wouldn't be making this thread, but I always seem to have a hard time with that.
I'm currently really into league of legends--actually, i'm obsessed with it. I got home from work at 9:15pm and I played until 12:30am. I used to be way worse, but I always seem to come back to games. I'm thinking of selling my ps3 on Ebay and investing the money in a gym membership and some clothes. I dutifully go out whenever I can (to do my AA drills), but I always have had this annoying video game habit that takes up so much of my time. I'm going to uninstall league of legends and a few other things. as far as my PS3 goes, I'm going to see if any relatives of mine want it and I'll bargain with them and sell it. Any ideas on what else I can do to finally give up this life long obsession? |

Solutions:
1. Take your Steam Account, and delete all contacts or friends on it that you don't know -really- well in real life. 2. Take your Steam Account, and delete all the local data. If you were like me, you lost about 100 gigs worth of game data and saves, which you'd never want to go back to again. 3. Sell any expensive items or characters you have in any RPGS/MMORPGs you play, Team Fortress 2, etc. 4. Sell any and all consoles, games, controllers, equipment, etc., that belongs to you. All of it. 5. Essentially purge your entire PC of games. For League of Legends, I believe you can deactivate the account. If this isn't possible, set the password to something random that you'll never remember, and set the e-mail address to something non-existent and random, or an e-mail address you know of with an impossible password. Sources: I did this shit seven days ago. P.S. Or just give it away. I gave away a top-tier Runescape account to a friend when I had enough at eleven years old. I also gave away a pretty high-level Priston Tale account when I was done with it, and deactivated a Level 80+ World of Warcraft account (when that level meant something), in addition to an original Ragnarok Online Level 70+ account. |

You'll feel a rush if you do as I posted. At first, you'll be thinking -
Jesus Christ, what did I do? Wasn't that too much? Answer: No fucking way. It was exactly what you needed. Video games are draining your life, ability to get hot pussy, social skills, and decaying your body. You'll probably log onto your account if you didn't fully disable it a few times for the first week, realize what you're doing, and then cancel out. Very quickly over time, you'll get out of this habit and stop it completely. |

what are the harmful effects? do you have credible sources? before you succeed at anything, you must first believe it is possible.

I definitely notice all of the news and such is 90% negativity, with a story or two about a rescued kitten - doesn't do a lot of good for your psyche. I tend to get a bit nauseated even when watching it for a few minutes.
As for actual good content, it's usually 75% commercials and waiting in-between breaks for the shit you actually want to see. I can just go stream Breaking Bad online instead if I want to watch something on there. Saves time and money. |

Yes, they were alternative news stories on the effects of television, referencing scientific studies and various info of that calibre.....A lot of is based on using common sense to discern the credible information, but common sense also shows the side effects of watching tv, even from personal experience i know how it demotivates "Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve" Napoleon Hill

I was out last night going for a bike ride and playground body-weight workout, and thinking about how cool it would be to start parkour and freerunning stuff to keep my workout fun and interesting....Anyways, I started trying to climb this building, climbing across a tree, and i realized that there are video games simulating what i was doing, but nothing was as much fun, as good a workout or teaching me to overcome my fears and doubts and strengthening my will like what i was actually PHYSICALLY doing
IF you can adopt the useful frame of the video game in that you are 'having fun', you can take that same thing that makes you feel addicted, and transfer it to useful stuff. Take for example buying and selling stuff for profit, you could think of it like a 'quest' lol. I used that same mentality when I was buying and selling cars, that I was 'treasure hunting', and that mindset made it a real life 'game' as well as giving me nice rewards as a result. Of course I was 'playing' the game with a strategy guide which helped, which was the how to buy and sell cars for profit course, definitely helped me avoid mistakes... I found in the past i would gravitate to games when i was feeling depressed or wanted escape from my problems....but when you become more aware of the negatives it makes video games easier to avoid.... This stuff is deep...you have to be a gamer to understand what giving up this stuff is like...I gave up video games almost 2 years ago in order to approach and girls and get laid...I was cancelling day 2's to play ff and other rpgs for xbox...your life...namely your dating life will grow exponentially if you give up video games and hit the gym... When Skyrim came out...I relapsed...I literally went to work and stayed in my house to play for two weeks...my friends did not see me for two weeks...do what Smooth Operator says...you will thank him years from now...I don't think video games are inherently evil it just takes away to much time from the things you need to improve on (Physique, Style, Social Freedom) Please give us an update PoeteMaudite |

Yeah quitting video games is so hard to do for serious gamers. I can relate cause I have been playing video games since I was 2.
But I also found other things to occupy my time besides that so it didn't consume my life like it did when I was 2 to 14. I wouldn't give it up all at once because you can withdraw from that stuff and go crazy. But good luck putting down the keyboard and controller dude. |

I didn't think the "Get Hung" guide would have girls eyeing my bulge. It did.
I didn't think that your exercise and diet advice would have girls checking me out. It did.
I DEFINITELY didn't think that your hair-loss prevention would fix my hairline. Not in a billion years. It mother fucking did. You saved me a crazy amount of time, a ton of money, unnecessary pain, and destroyed my #1 source of anxiety. DESTROYED IT.
