About a month ago (when Bit was $698), Happy Hippo started accepting Bitcoin. It's almost at $900.

I remember back in the Silk Road days, Scotty and I bought bit for $3-6. When it got to $11, we thought it was getting too expensive.

I don't follow Bitcoins very closely, but I remember one major fluctuation they had [a year ago?] where they jumped up to . That was just days after a more techy friend had set me up with a bitcoin wallet.. But, sadly, a few days before I had made moves on the investment.

Crazy they're jumping back up like that.

I'll just stay out of it.

Can someone tell me about the value of bitcoin? It is my understanding that the only reason for someone to buy bitcoin (apart from purchase purposes use ie silkroad3.0) is to speculate on other businesses adopting the currency in the future, mostly due to its blockchain technology that can rapidly integrate information between different financial institutions. This can supposedly streamline costs on certain types of transactions. That being said, how many mainstream businesses can practically try to adopt bitcoin?

In my current, uneducated opinion, bitcoin has failed to offer substantial value to businesses except for the online ilicit drug trade (which I may or may not have engaged in, not saying im strictly against it). What is the reason to buy it? What advantages do companies (not asking about Happy Hippo) gain by accepting bitcoin?

Very low conversion and/or handling fees. A year back I sold a website for 4k through a broker and received the payment in bitcoins. Only had to pay like 3% in fees. Had it been through paypal that number would've been doubled or tripled.

It is, however, a very volatile currency which does sucks a times.
