I took karate classes for 3 years back when I was like 13 years old, and I want to go back to doing martial arts of some kind. For cardiovascular exercise and for fun. I was considering MMA but I don't fancy the aspect of grappling.
Some base form of strength is needed in grappling but it's thats at the highest levels where the competitors are all elite. The Gracies weren't big but they we're choking motherfuckers out in the first UFC events. That being said, is self defense a priority? If so I'd recommend starting a full contact martial art (try all of them) and see which one you like. The more you like it the more you apply yourself and like it. It's very important to do something you like because otherwise you'll end up making a half hearted effort and it won't even be worth it.
And it seems heavily based on strength. I would rather do martial arts based on agility and technique.
Well it's not gay, and out of all the martial arts, grappling is the LEAST based on strength. I would put a 150 pound Jiu Jitsu guy up against an untrained 220 pounder any day of the week. The Jiu Jitsu guy would have him unconscious in under a minute. It's mostly all technique in grappling.
No I don't care how it looks to others. To me it looks gay, but that's not the main thing. I don't want to be lying on the floor like that. Why do you even care why I don't prefer MMA over other martial arts? I only asked for other candidates. I have nothing against MMA, you don't need to start a discussion to defend it.
Why ask for advice if you already made up your mind ?
There is a reason BJJ is recommended by so many, it's because it's the most effective. Being able to take bigger guys down and stop them without seriously injuring them is amazing and way more usable in real life then karate.
If you wanna learn just striking go for Thai Boxing.
Both do include a lot of contact (BJJ obviously a lot more) but that stimulates real life fights whereas karate is almost useless in RL.

Are you serious!?
I have to try it now. Thanks man.
But like, brazillian, or just jiu jitsu?
What's the difference?
Rather hear it from you than other shady people.

I didn't think the "Get Hung" guide would have girls eyeing my bulge. It did.
I didn't think that your exercise and diet advice would have girls checking me out. It did.
I DEFINITELY didn't think that your hair-loss prevention would fix my hairline. Not in a billion years. It mother fucking did. You saved me a crazy amount of time, a ton of money, unnecessary pain, and destroyed my #1 source of anxiety. DESTROYED IT.
Kratom is next!
