Was going to put this in the Gym section but i feel it has more to do with looks. So has anyone got any recommendations for correcting posture, specifically regarding the lower back, shoulders and neck. I made a solid 90 day effort to hold correct posture and while it has yielded some improvements i haven't solved the problem to my satisfaction. I found a video by Elliot Hulse that claims muscular imbalance is often the cause of posture problems and was planning on doing some training to correct it.
If anyone who has had success with correcting imbalances has any tips for the type of stretches and exercises to do that would be appreciated.
If you are looking to correct posture use Alexander technique. ( You can Google it and do it)
I knew about it and recently in my acting class the instructed told us to do it.
Basically there's two ways
lay down with head on books like below
Do it for like 10 minutes and relax. (it elongates the length of the spine by an Inch)
The way I prefer is similar to the pic below
Basically what I do is.
stand back against a walk and four points should touch the wall.
Heels,ass, shoulder blades, Head
do this for a minute then walk keeping the posture.
Hope it helps
"There's no fighter like me. I was reading in the newspaper today there was fighters quoting "I don't like Mike Tyson because he's too cocky and he's arrogant" but for all the fighters that said that, I let them know there's no fighter like me and I can beat any man in the world - Mike Tyson
Yup, I certainly have done something that improved posture (my whole body/physical existence actually).
I started a barbell strength training program. There are many, I bought the book Starting Strength, Basic Barbell Training and have followed that. Best $30 I have ever spent in my life, no exaggeration. I think if you do any strength program that focuses on the big compound barbell lifts though you should be OK.
Within about six to maybe eight weeks of consistent training my squat, deadlift, overhead press and power clean pretty much whipped my entire back and shoulder musculature and posture into shape. Learning the lifts teaches you great posture not only for standing around but also the proper way to set your back during everyday lifting movements to prevent injury. The reason why you need to do the barbell lifts for this and not just typical bodybuilding isolation excercises is that the barbell lifts force you to use good form to get things done efficiently, and you are increasing the load on that form (posture) each time you train, so all the muscles and muscle memory associated with it get strengthened. Because you are loading the entire body at the same time with these excercises the progressive loading also helps to correct muscle imbalances over time.
Having the proper amount of muscle mass built up proportionally in your body does wonders for naturally holding everything in the right place, giving you better posture and less aches and pains (esp. for us older, creakier guys )).

I didn't think the "Get Hung" guide would have girls eyeing my bulge. It did.
