I made and stored away over $100,000 in a little over a year doing D2D sales for solar and now I am transitioning to work for a startup company where I'll start the outbound sales team and really learn how to sell software. I wanted to post this to show you all what is possible as I was broke before and see if you had any questions. **HERE'S MY KEY ADVICE*** Only ask quality questions. I get private messages sometimes from people and some of them ask a question that could easily be answered by typing it in google within 10 seconds. The quality of your questions determines everything. **This is also what sales is, asking good questions** ![]() Instead of asking, "How do I sell?" you could say, "What book would you recommend for someone that understands basic sales theory but wants to learn more specifics on how to do appointments better?" for example. They both ask the same thing but one actually gets you a good response and the other does not.

What company did you work for? Do you think your success came from the product you were selling or your method of selling it? If it's the latter, what strategies did you use that were most effective? Are those strategies specific to D2D, or sales in general?
What did your day look like and how did you organize it? Did any lifestyle factors contribute to putting away so much money (like not having to pay rent/living at home), or is purely a reflection of how much you were making? You say asking how you sell is a bad question--but how specifically did you do it? Everyone in sales usually has a prepared, proven hook or line of questioning that helps get the sale or lead the sale along, what was yours with this job? And was whatever you used beneficial for sales in general? What are the specific steps are one can take right now, starting from nothing, to give themselves the same amount of cash in their bank account in one year's time? I also like your book question if you can answer that. Forgot to add: thanks for doing this. |

Thanks a lot for doing this. I remember you worked in a car dealership for a few years. Do you reckon it's the best entry level job to learn the skills and then take on higher ticket items?
I have few months experience with D2D sales and I really like it, but I'm still in college so it's not full time. I would love to get into a high-ticket, high-commission type of job but I'm not sure which industry is for me. I'd love to get into the energy efficiency industry though. Insulation, isolation, solar, pellets. Thanks again. It's always exciting when you post. |

I worked for a Toyota Dealership as my first sales job. I work for SolarCity as my second sales job, which is the one I'm posting about. My success came 100% to how I sold. However, I'd like to add, the first step to getting a sales job is choosing a GREAT product. The first sale is yourself. You have to know it is great and going to help them. The strategies I used were sales in general, and obviously some specific info for what I was doing, like how to knock a door. I made that much money because I was living in a 2 bedroom apartment with 3 roommates, and I drive a 2002 Toyota Corolla. I didn't spend my money on stupid shit. I ate really healthy to keep my energy up. If you want to do what I did, pick a great product, find a good team, and know that the potential upside of income is where you need it to be, then go out and GRIND.

I don't think cars is necessarily the "best" entry level job to learn the skills. It would be a good one. I would say doing something like selling comcast over the phone would NOT be a good choice. Pick something like cars, D2D sales, etc. that will involve a lot of friction between you and the customer so you get to experience everything and are able to do it in-person. Renewable energy is huge. There are a lot of people making a KILLING selling solar.

I hate to rain on your parade. I have no doubt that your a very good sales person. However, most Solar at this point is BS and you know it! In maybe a few states it works for Hot Water & Pool Heating, and even in those states the payback period is way too long.
Think about how many people you really helped? Then how many people you stuck with an $8,000 Solar Water Heater on credit? I'm an Engineer, look at the real numbers. Your basically stealing money with a glossy sales pitch and " Green " product. Would you sell one of these to your parents? |

Building up those accounts in your 20s,30s has a lot to do with expenses too.
What are your monthly expenses: Rent, Food, Entertainment, etc.? I've lived on $4000 a month for the past 3 years and there is always some leftover. Used to live on $2000 a month. People are surprised that I only take a salary of $60,000/yr. (keep in mind; $10,000 is paid to the gov't in payroll taxes) Not living in LA (full time) is a big reason why and I don't do luxury shit (watches, cars, jewelry, gold grill teeths, clothing, long vacations). No interest at all. My GF's apartment in LA is $4129/month. Happy I don't pay the bill! Please no Private Messages. No rain felt over here ![]() I don't sell Solar Water Heaters. I sell photovoltaic systems. Some people lease them and others buy them. I don't actually take your comment seriously because you most likely have no idea what I am actually selling. I go into a house, they are paying $220 a month for electricity. With solar, with NO upfront cost, they can own a power plant on their roof at $180 per month. This family is going to pay an electricity bill either way. Nobody is planning on NOT having electricity. What return on investment are you getting on paying your utility? You can either pay more for dirty electricity or you can pay less in electricity from day 1 with 0 out of pocket and own an asset. I'd sell my parents if they didn't have so many trees shading their roof.

What's up Chris! I'm not exactly sure what my monthly expenses are to be honest. I don't track them. I'm like you, I don't care about luxury shit like watches, cars, gold grilss (haha), etc. The happiness from those purchases wears off really fast. I'm sure you feel a lot more fulfillment watching your empire grow and growing as a person with new experiences than you would with buying luxury stuff, but to each is own. $4,129 a month is insane! My rent was around $700 per month. Then I reckon I spent $300-$400 per month on food as I eat out everyday for lunch, usually Chipotle. All out of the door I probably was spending around $3,000 per month, maybe a little bit more later on when I started doing more things to help my health and eased up a bit. I never had a problem with spending a bunch of money on pointless stuff as I was pretty much on my own from age 16/17, and my parents stopped buying me things I wanted when I was around the age of 12/13. Coming from being semi-homeless and pure survival mode, you learn to use your money wisely.

That's cool as long as the customer know the true costs are up from and what to expect thats all that matters. Here in Florida there are a lot of crooks twisting peoples arms getting them to buy things that make no sense.
I have a working knowledge of photovoltaics. The concept of using them in conjunction with the grid. Sometimes taking power from the grid and sometimes putting surplus power back on. You sound like you have a conscious which is refreshing. Good luck in your next venture! |

I didn't think the "Get Hung" guide would have girls eyeing my bulge. It did.
I didn't think that your exercise and diet advice would have girls checking me out. It did.
I DEFINITELY didn't think that your hair-loss prevention would fix my hairline. Not in a billion years. It mother fucking did. You saved me a crazy amount of time, a ton of money, unnecessary pain, and destroyed my #1 source of anxiety. DESTROYED IT.
