Regardless of who you're voting for: How much of a media scam is the 4 year presidential cycle?
It's always a shitshow filled with fake drama and deceivingly cut clips meant to trigger outrage.
Nobody really gets their minds changed after the first few months but we go on for two fucking years so CNN, NBC, and Fox can rake in the money trotting fake experts in front of us to tell us how to think.
The media only sells what people will consume.
If you and enough of us decide that what we will consume in election coverage is actual facts about policy positions, voting records, accomplishments etc. of candidates then they will actually provide that.
If people keep lapping up reality TV style drama and bullshit then they will happily sell us that.
Outside of a small community such as the city-states of ancient Greece, real democracy doesn't work too well because in a huge society most people are stupid, have no sense of community and common purpose, and act accordingly. So we have a democratic republic instead, which was the Founding Fathers' attempt to square a large and diverse populace with fair representation in government.
It ain't perfect, but it actually works kinda well if people educate themselves and participate.
Unfortunately we don't have that in today's society.
The problem is that there even were millions of people getting enthusiastic about a candidate who was actually talking political issues and detailing concrete plans regarding how to improve things for people in the US, but he wasn't strong enough to overcome the huge bias in the mainstream media to get past the person who had nothing but name recognition because she's married to a former president. This way the electorate was left with the two candidates who benefit from the system of financial and educational inequality that Mokele described.
Yup, and on the other side there was a very smart, qualified and accomplished candidate who had well thought out positions (Kasich), but the media just couldn't stop itself from being completely controlled by the sensationalism of Trump and pretty much kept the focus on him non-stop, to the point where Trump sucked all the air out of the room and the other Repub candidates withered away with no spotlight.
If the people had stopped watching political news coverage when it looked like a reality TV show and put their eyeballs toward coverage that actually looked at the issues and qualifications of the candidate we might not have had Trump's rise be so swift and devastating. Hard to say though--Trump definitely tuned in to the mood of a very disaffected electorate more than anyone except Sanders.
Mokele is spot on in regards to how the process works.
This was the biggest F''' You to the political establishment in history. All I've got to say is… Given the divide Trump has inherited AND created, he has the chance to either be one of the best or the worst presidents ever. Lets hope it is the latter.
