I found the bathmate fun as fuck from the jump. I had don't manual stuff for a couple months before getting a bathmate, and how I separate it is ill usually do a half hour at night (roughly 10PM and close to 90% hard) and then do another 15 minutes in the morning which Ill be roughly 30-50% hard. from what I've experienced is as long as you're varying the erection level you should be fine. I would not suggest going in 90% hard every single time, and the only real reason I do it in the morning is because ill pump while I'm in the shower after a workout where I have active dick (blood leaves dick to use in muscles).
I have been using the BM with an erection for no more than 15 mins. And I am afraid to give it too much pressure lest hurting my little brother. Now that 20 minutes is what some people have done, I will try that too.
What I haven't done is jelqing both pre and post BM. But I will add that, about 5 minutes, into my routine, at least as a warmup.

You should use the bm at least 2-3 weeks without a complete erection, so your body can adjust to it first.
After that feel free to go in completely hard.
As for the sessions, you should split the full 15-20 minutes in 3 or 4 sets of 5 minutes each. So you can check if everything is good/no pain and can get fresh blood in =less/no water retention.
If you keep it on continuously for 15-20 minutes you're going to get alot of water retention.
Do your manual exercises before the bm, you'll get better girth/length expansion.
